Is Gold-Plated Jewelry Hypoallergenic?
Short answer: it depends on the metal under the gold. Gold plating is a thin layer. When it wears, your skin meets the base metal, and that is what causes rashes. Gold plated stainless steel is a safe bet for sensitive skin. Gold plated brass often is not.
Why jewelry makes skin react
The usual cause is nickel, and sometimes copper. Both hide in brass and in unnamed "alloy" jewelry. Watch for:
- Redness, itching or small bumps where the piece touches
- Sore, swollen earlobes
- Green marks on your skin (harmless, but it means the base metal is showing)
What to look for
- A named base metal. If a listing says only "gold plated," ask what is underneath.
- Stainless steel. 316L surgical-grade steel releases very little nickel, which is why it is the go-to for sensitive skin.
- Honest care info. Brands that tell you how to wear and clean a piece usually know what it is made of.
What we make at Jewelry & Art
Every piece is hypoallergenic 18k gold plated stainless steel, designed in Miami and made for everyday wear. Most pieces use 316L surgical-grade stainless steel and are nickel free. They are water and sweat resistant too, so workouts, humid days and hand washing are fine. Shop our necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings and wear the gold look without the itch.
Keep it looking new
- Put jewelry on after lotion, perfume and sunscreen as the chemicals wear plating faster.
- Take it off before swimming. Chlorine due to its chemical content wears the plating faster.
Quick answers
Is gold-plated jewelry safe for sensitive skin? Yes, when the base metal is stainless steel. Check the base metal first.
Will it turn my skin green? Not with stainless steel. Green marks come from copper in the base metal.
Is stainless steel nickel free? Stainless steel contains nickel locked inside the metal, and 316L releases very little considered hypoallergenic. If you have a severe nickel allergy, ask your dermatologist first.
Can I wear it in the rain or at the gym? Yes. Our pieces are water and sweat resistant. Just take them off before swimming in a pool due to the chemicals wearing the plating faster.
